Blellow SxSW Winner, The Launch Party, and More Bug Fixes!

Blellow hosted a successful launch party on Friday, March 6, 2009 at our offices in downtown San Antonio. We had quite a crowd, and everyone was in good spirits and enjoying discussing Blellow in the midst of celebrating First Friday. You can view photos from our party above or on our page on Flickr.

During the party we chose live via uStream our winner for our SxSWi Ticket Giveaway, and we are happy to announce the winner is Philip Medina (@avatar696314 on Blellow)! Congratulations Philip, we look forward to meeting you in Austin later this week!

We’ve also cleaned up quite a few bugs over the weekend with the new builds. Here’s a list of some of the major fixes/improvements:

  • User profile links now work properly. You can now link to your Blellow account via http://beta.blellow.com/username instead of the longer profile links from before.
  • The “I’m looking for help” radio button has been changed into a checkbox. All status updates without the checkbox will be just normal status updates. We’re waiting on another push that will highlight the box when kudos are enabled on the post allowing you to easier located people looking for help.
  • Meetups RSVP: Selecting your “Attending” status should now place you in the right category.
  • Followers list in sidebar: I have almost 300 people I’m following, and the avatar list was getting long on the page! It’s now been truncated at the first 36 with a “See Them All” link at the bottom
  • On Projects board detail, the link back to the projects board pointed towards the Jobs board instead. This has been resolved!
  • We’ve increased the number of status updates on the home dashboard to 20
  • Timestamps on original posts now keep the time they were posted on, and new replies appear at the top of the thread. We may reverse this as it looks a little confusing.

We’re still working hard to get as many bugs and features ready for SxSWi on Friday!

What Is Blellow?

Communications Manager Veronica Jorden gives an overview of what Blellow.com is all about, and how the site will function. This is a great introduction to what we are seeking to accomplish with our new upcoming social network, and how it can benefit freelancers, creative professionals, and employers.

Topics covered in the video:

  • Who does Blellow benefit?
  • How does Blellow help freelancers overcome challenges?
  • Productivity tools that Blellow will offer versus other social networks
  • How do “Kudos” work, and how does that affect credibility and popularity on the site?
  • When does Blellow launch, and where you can find Blellow at South By Southwest in Austin this year

Note: The Blellow beta is beginning March 3rd (not late March)

Blellow Will Be At SXSW

SXSWLogoSXSW 2009 is only fifty-six days away! We plan to launch blellow.com at SXSW. We have a booth and will also be co-hosting one of the most fabulous parties at this year’s event (details coming soon)! We are very excited to be attending this year and invite all of you to come and see us!

One of many great events happening at SXSW this year is the Accelerator Program. We are throwing our hat in the ring and stepping up for a little competition. For this program we had to submit 250 words that describe Blellow; just a few paragraphs to describe our vision and how it will benefit the online community. We wanted to share our entry with you. So here is Blellow in exactly 250 words:

Blellow is a social network allowing freelancers and professionals to collaborate, find work, and solve problems through a friendly, familiar micro-blog interface by answering the question: “What are you working on?”

We’re all faced with daily challenges that consume our valuable time, and some of these challenges can take hours to overcome if it’s not your core competency. But with a little expert advice from a friend, the problem may be solved in minutes.

Blellow offers the ability to communicate with groups of people based on skills and interests. You can direct your posts, so you get better answers to your questions, relevant feedback when you need it, and can engage in conversations you are most interested in. All responses are posted in threaded discussions, so it’s easy to keep track of it all.

Credibility is earned with “kudos”. Each time you help someone, you can earn a kudo from that person. The more kudos you have, the higher you rank in searches, gaining you higher visibility with peers and potential clients. In the current economy, finding work can be difficult. But with Blellow, members can search the Job Board and can collaborate on projects, working together through these tough times.

And while collaborating virtually is great, nothing beats meeting in person. Find Blellow meetups and coworking opportunities at home or when traveling.

At Blellow, members can take advantage of the site’s tools to further their knowledge, extend their network, and discover and develop new ideas to get things done.

We’ll find out if we are a finalist by January 23rd, so keep your fingers crossed for us! As always, we would love to hear your thoughts and get your feedback on what we are working on. And if you will be attending SXSW let us know, we’d love to meet you!
