Summer In Full Color

Weather report this morning said it is going to be 100 degrees on Thursday, and in my book that means it’s summertime. But besides the heat, summer for me has always meant enjoying nature and time outside. I hope you enjoy this collection of colorful images that remind me of summer.

Who’s On Blellow? Mark Sherrick

Blellow is growing! New members are joining everyday, but after almost 3 months, there are a few members who have become friends. These folks have been Blellow evangelists since day one and we couldn’t have gotten to where we are with out them. We’d like to introduce you to one of those friends today; regular guest blogger and all around good guy, Mark Sherrick.

Mark SherrickName: Mark Sherrick

Location: Bristol, CT

SkillsMarketing: Sales, Creative Consulting

Current Status: Contrary to the image my blog posts and some other things I do present, I am unemployed at the moment. I am in the beginning stages of the setup of my freelance consulting stuff.

What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working towards officially being a freelancer.

Favorite part of freelancing/entrepreneurship?
Its hard to say, really. I enjoy being my own boss and making my own choices.

Biggest challenge you face as a freelancer/entrepreneur?
That first step off the cliff is a big challenge. In the past, I had huge issues with second guessing myself, but I am beyond that now.

What are some of your favorite tools that you are using to run your business as a freelancer?
My brain, for the most part. But for actual tools, Twitter has done great things for expanding my network and introducing me to some great folks. As for software, since most of what I do is conceptual, I don’t have to use too much beyond using the general Microsoft office stuff and GIMP for occasional graphical work.

As a freelancer have you found it hard to balance work and play time? What do you do to try to keep things balanced?
As a person in general, I have a hard time balancing work and play. It’s why up until launching my freelancing, most of my work has been in places where I’m not stuck behind a desk or anything like that. Working at home does make balancing things a bit easier for me, because everything is within reach.

Has Blellow been helpful to you? If so, please share how it has helped.
Blellow has been amazingly helpful. I have met some amazing people and gotten some great advice on what to do and what not to do. I really appreciate the social aspect of Blellow as well, because working at home, all I have is my dog and cat to keep me company, and they don’t talk much.

It’s Moving Time!

There comes a time when hard decisions have to be made, and for us, that day has come. Sadly, but with good reason, we are giving up our swanky downtown studio. Yes, we will miss the awesome First Friday Tweetups and get-togethers, but alas, the time has come to make a smart decision and recognize that as wonderful and lovely as our studio is, we’re just not using it enough to warrant keeping it. All of us at Blellow are freelancers and we love working from home!

Our lease is up, so it just makes sense for us to move out, continue working green & saving some green, while we reallocate the expense and time to continuing to improve Blellow.  This is a cut that just makes sense from every angle.

So, join us in saying goodbye to what has been our home away from home (read our client showroom and party house). We will miss you studio, but you are a sacrifice we are willing to make for our fellow Blellowers.

P.S. For those of you living in the San Antonio area, we will be hosting a studio sale event this Saturday, May 30th to sell furniture and office supplies. Interested? Come by from 10 -3 and check it out! Also, if you know of anyone in SA who is looking for a great location in Southtown for their business, let us know - we’ll be glad to introduce you to our wonderful landlady!

The Art of Playing with Your Food

When I was a kid, like for most people, I was always told not to play with my food. Of course that didn’t stop me from making hot butter lava filled volcanoes with my mashed potatoes and sadistically biting the heads off our animal crackers as I pretended to be a giant alien princess trying to take over the zoo. But never in a million years could I have imagined the amazing things that can be created when you let artists use food as their medium. Take a look at these eight great videos of artists being creative and turning the adage -food is meant to be eaten - on it’s head.

Warning: All of these videos have sound, so if ya don’t want a whole bunch of background music playing, hit mute!

1. Phil Henson painting the Mona Greasa with nothing but the grease off a bag of hamburgers. Pretty amazing, but pretty scary all at the same time!

2. Another Phil Henson masterpiece…this time using Oreo Cookies. Curious there’s not a glass of milk to be seen anywhere in this video.

On Fire - Goodbye Art - Food

3. Who knew chocolate syrup was made for more than just ice cream? Watch as Xiaonan creates amazing detail using nothing but his fingers, a spoon, and a bottle of chocolate syrup. Roar!

4. Elvis, black velvet and cheese puffs….need I say more?

5. Faster than a rice cooker….it’s Kikkoman. Watch Ben paint a wall mural of Kikkoman using Kikkoman soy sauce. And while you’re there, watch the related video of him drinking and entire bottle…why? Not sure but I guess some will do anything to be one with their art.

6. This one’s a compilation of a whole bunch of funny fruit and vegetable sculptures. I’ll warn you , it’s a little on the cute site, but honestly how can you resist flocks of cauliflower sheep and kissing strawberries?

7. From an episode of the Food Channel’s show “Unwrapped” this video features a guy who uses ABC (ABC = already been chewed for those of you not up on your gum lingo) gum to sculpt and create relief art. Um, ewww! Cool….but ewww!

8. Watch this Art of the Watermelon video to see Hugh McMahon carve a likeness of James Beard out of a watermelon. I’m liking this…it’s kinda like pumpkin carving but for the summertime, neat!
