All About Blellow: A Productivity Microblog for Professionals

What does the word “Blellow” mean?
It’s a term that was invented in one episode of the 2005 hit show “Malcolm in the Middle”. In that episode, Reese says: “I invented a new color…I mixed blue and yellow and got…blellow!”. Since then, the definition of blellow has been expanded a bit by some non-mainstream sources. From the Unword Dictionary, Blellow is “The color produced when mixing blue and yellow, when green is just too mundane a word.”

What is Blellow, the social network?
For Mandi Leman, Blellow’s creator, the name blellow aptly describes the concept of creating something new using known elements. After years of freelancing as an independent art director and interaction designer and founding a small online ad agency called MediaRich.net, Mandi became acutely aware of the challenges that freelancers and entrepreneurs face when they work alone, usually at home. Everyone can use a second set of eyes or additional ideas from their peers or professionals like themselves. Knowledge is meant to be shared. While there are many tools for learning, our best resources are each other.

How will Blellow help me?
Blellow uses the idea of a microblog that is kind of like Twitter, a bit like Facebook, and as John Biggs pointed out in his article on Techcrunch, throw in LinkedIn and Yammer in the mix. Mashable and the Huffington Post writers agree that Blellow is a “better microblog” that is designed specifically for productivity and getting work done.

I already use Twitter and Facebook. Why would I use Blellow too?

The answer is that if you don’t need a network for pro to pro communication, then you probably don’t need to use Blellow too. But if you could use getting advice from entrepreneurs or creative or tech pros, Blellow’s main purpose is to do exactly that. The way it is structured and its user base make it entirely unique. While Twitter and Facebook have many more members, they are both networks that are used predominately for keeping socially connected with a wide range of people and usually for work reasons as an aside rather than as a primary purpose. Blellow is made up of around 7500 creative and technical entrepreneurs, freelancers, as well as corporate professionals who are all there to collaborate, solve problems and help each other work on projects. Blellow is structured into groups, both private and public, and because of that, pros can communicate with groups of people based on skills and interests that help them with their work. They can direct posts, get better answers to questions, relevant feedback, and can engage in conversations that they are most interested in because of groups. They can also share all kinds of files, which Twitter doesn’t support at all and Facebook only allows people to share pictures or videos. Pros can opt in to receiving messages from groups that they belong to and can create private groups. Private groups can be used to share files and communicate with clients or with other professionals you are working with.

What are some Blellow success stories?
You can see Blellow success stories taking place every day. These don’t need to be big game changers, but they comprise of the things that professional people need every day. Things like getting quick answers to work questions, people helping you collaborate on projects, getting non-biased feedback from pros, and sharing helpful industry-related info & resources. It’s free to post project and job leads and most members get leads by just joining in the conversation.

How Blellow Can Help You.

Mandi Leman, Blellow’s founder: “When you work alone as a freelancer, you don’t have a group of people at your fingertips to help you figure things out.”. “You can’t just stop someone in the hall to ask a question. That’s why Blellow is so important: It’s a way to get instantaneous advice from the right people, who have the expertise you need at that very moment.”

Today’s economic climate makes Blellow even more of a necessity. “As full-time jobs disappear, more and more people are looking for contract work and making the transition to freelancing. Being able to reach out to professional networks is more important than ever before.”

10 Ways to Support Blellow

Growing a successful community is a daily challenge – where to advertise, how to market, and what features to add. So, for our Blellow members and fans, I wanted to share some ways that you can help us!

1. Tell your friends!

A social network is only as great as the people who show up.  The more people that are part of the Blellow community, the more helpful it’ll be. So, if you are a member of other social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google Groups, help us spread the word and grow the community by talking about Blellow and asking your friends to join.

2. Join a group and tell your friends!

One of the features we offer is the ability to “turn down the noise” and just focus on conversations that appeal to you. Groups allow you to pick and choose topics you want to discuss or people you want to reach out to. We’ve added a nifty invite to group button, so if you know someone who would also find benefit or be a great resource for a group, please invite them!

3. Buy an Ad!

If you have a product or service that would appeal to the Blellow community, please take a look at our Advertising page and consider buying an ad.

4. Be a guest blogger!

We want YOU to be a guest blogger on Blellow! Got an idea for a story or tutorial that will help freelancers and professionals? Post on our blog and we’ll help get the word out. If you’re interested in guest blogging, let us know and we’ll get you set up!

5. Post your jobs and projects!

Another great reason folks come to Blellow is for the jobs and projects boards. If you are looking to hire someone or need help on a project, post it to our boards. It’s free and we’ll help you spread the word to qualified freelancers!

6. Post your meetups and events!

If you are hosting, sponsoring, or even attending a meetup, then post them to our meetups page to let others in your area know about it.

7. Log in daily!

Sounds simple, but it is the easiest way to help us keep the momentum of the  Blellow community going. Simply logging in and posting a response to “What are you working on?” can help spur conversation. And who knows; someone may have posted a request for help that is right up your alley and is searching for a freelancer with your skill set for a new project. We’ve created some great notifications that let you know if you have received a reply or if your group has new messages. You can opt in to see all messages posted to your favorite groups. We love seeing your smiling faces on Blellow, so don’t forget to stop by and see us daily!

8. Digg, Delicious, and StumbleUpon us!

You’ve already got them installed on your toolbar, so don’t forget to tag us so others can find out about the cool stuff going on at Blellow. We’d really appreciate the link love!

9. Use our API

We’ve just opened up our API. If you are a developer, we’d love for you to create an app for Blellow. A few Blellow members already have a few ideas and efforts in the works for an iPhone app, Wordpress plugins, Blackberry app, and a widget using Google Wave. Check out the API group for the details.

10. Send us Red Bull and protein bars!

So it’s not exactly the breakfast of champions, but we gotta keep going somehow. Late nights, early mornings, and jam packed hours in between are all part of a day’s work for us. Now, don’t get me wrong, we LOVE it, but every once in a while a pick-me-up would come in handy!

There, that’s it: 10 ways you can help Blellow. Questions? Let us know! Ideas? Let us know!

Now if you will excuse me, I gotta get back to work!

It’s Moving Time!

There comes a time when hard decisions have to be made, and for us, that day has come. Sadly, but with good reason, we are giving up our swanky downtown studio. Yes, we will miss the awesome First Friday Tweetups and get-togethers, but alas, the time has come to make a smart decision and recognize that as wonderful and lovely as our studio is, we’re just not using it enough to warrant keeping it. All of us at Blellow are freelancers and we love working from home!

Our lease is up, so it just makes sense for us to move out, continue working green & saving some green, while we reallocate the expense and time to continuing to improve Blellow.  This is a cut that just makes sense from every angle.

So, join us in saying goodbye to what has been our home away from home (read our client showroom and party house). We will miss you studio, but you are a sacrifice we are willing to make for our fellow Blellowers.

P.S. For those of you living in the San Antonio area, we will be hosting a studio sale event this Saturday, May 30th to sell furniture and office supplies. Interested? Come by from 10 -3 and check it out! Also, if you know of anyone in SA who is looking for a great location in Southtown for their business, let us know - we’ll be glad to introduce you to our wonderful landlady!
